NepalPRIME has sent a number of teams to Nepal in the last seven years who have run!programmes in
many centres, contributing to Family! doctor training, faculty development, palliative care, mental
health! care development and training of rural pastors in basic health support. The PRIME desk
holder revisited in April 2011 to contribute to faculty and curriculum development in Patan Academy
of Health Sciences (PAHS) which opened in March 2010 and the Kathmandu Institute of Science
and Technology Medical School (KIST), and continues involvement with these institutions by email.
There remain many opportunities in Nepal and potential for many future visits, although it is
probably best for PRIME to focus in mental health training programmes in future as this remains an
area of great need. A PRIME UK tutor led a mental health team to Nepal in 2010; following this a
potential partnership with a community based Nepali mental health charity is developing. Another
visit in April discussed their specific training needs and it is hoped that another mental health team
can visit next year to run further training.
Nursing
PRIME tutors have been teaching faculty staff in two nurse training schools over a number of years.
PRIME is providing an ongoing training programme for both of the main community psychiatric care groups.
"Before I knew.... now I understand." Nepalese psychiatrist after attending a PRIME course.
PRIME tutors were central to the introduction of the first certificated palliative care programme in Nepal and we are delighted that this project has now been taken forward by local Nepalese tutors to improve the care of patients throughout the country.
PRIME is now developing a new initiative to involve church and community leaders in basic health care provision.
